WINNERS OF THE BRITISH COUNCIL AND LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION INDONESIAN RESIDENCY, NELLY ROSE AND ODETTE STEELE WORKED WITH RENOWNED INDONESIAN DESIGNER DIAN PELANGI TO CREATE AN UTTERLY UNIQUE TAKE ON MODEST FASHION UNLIKE ANYTHING SEEN BEFORE. THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN LONDON GRADUATES AND TRADITIONAL INDONESIAN CRAFTSMANSHIP DEMONSTRATES THE INTERCONNECTIVITY BETWEEN WOMEN ACROSS THE WORLD- A CELEBRATION OF CULTURE AND MULTIPLE IDENTITIES. 

DIAN PELANGI

DIAN PELANGI IS A YOUNG FASHION DESIGNER PIONEERING AND PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF MUSLIM FASHION IN BOTH LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL SPHERES. HAVING GRADUATED SUCESSFULLY FROM ESMOD IN 2008, DIAN PELANGI HAS GAINED INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE AND BROADER PERSPECTIVE ON HOW TO INTRODUCE AND UNIFY MUSLIM STYLE INTO THE VAST SPECTRUM OF FASHION. 

DIAN DRAWS INSPIRATION FOR THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW AND IS REFLECTED IN HER MULTITALENTED SKILL SET AND FINE EYE FOR DETAIL, COLOUR AND ARTISTIC FLAIR. AS WELL AS HER TRADEMARK OF VIBRANT PALETTES DIAN EXPRESSES AN UNWAVERING LOYALTY TOWARDS TRADITIONAL INDONESIAN TECHNIQUE.  DIAN IS THE YOUNGEST MEMBER OF ASOSIASI PERANCANG PENGUSAHA MUDA INDONESIA WHICH GRANTED HER THE CHANCE TO PUBLISH HER OWN BOOK IN 2012, A VISUAL STREET STYLE COLLECTIVE OF MUSLIM WOMEN WHO DIAN PERSONALLY SELECTED WHILST ON HER TRAVELS. 

THE DIAN PELANGI BRAND WAS CREATED BY BAPAK IR. DJAMALOEDIN AND HIS WIFE IBU HERNANI IN 1991 AND NAMED AFTER THEIR NEWBORN BABY GIRL. DIAN PELANGI HAS MORE THAN 500 DIRECT EMPLOYEES AND 14 EXCLUSIVE RETAIL STORES IN 13 CITIES ACROSS INDONESIA. THE BRAND WAS BORN OUT OF THE DESIRE TO PROMOTE THE TRADITIONAL OUTFITS OF INDONESIA AND SPECIALIZES IN MUSLIM FASHION. DIAN PELANGI'S IDENTITY LIES SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE VARIOUS AND ASSORTED OCLOURS OF THE RAINBOW AND TRADITIONAL MANUFACTURING PROCESS. 

NELLY ROSE

NELLY ROSE IS A LONDON BASED FASHION TEXTILE DESIGNER SPECIALISING IN PRINT AND PATTERN FOR WOMENSWEAR AND MENSWEAR. A STRONG LOVE OF COLOUR AND BOLD ILLUSTRATIVE STORY TELLING DEFINES HER DESIGN WORK. NELLY'S DEDICATION IN ADVOCATING POSITIVE GLOBAL CHANGE THROUGH HER WORK HAS LEAD TO INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION IN INDONESIA AND AFRICA. 

NELLY TRANSLATES HER TEXTILE DEISFN AND ILLUSTRATIONS INTO A RANGE OF PRODUCTS WITH AN UNDERLYING STORY INCLUDING ZINE PUBLICATIONS, ACCESSORIES AND INSTALLATIONS WITH A STRONG EMPHASIS ON THE PRESERVATION OF CRAFT. A DISTINCTIVE ABSTRACT STYLE DEFINES BOTH HER WORK, AND HER CALL FOR POSITIVE SUSTAINABLE CHANGE. COMBINING ART AND JOURNALISM SHE AIMS TO MAKE A STATEMENT CREATING BEAUTIFUL FASHION WHISLT ELIMINATING EXPLOITATION AND WITHOUT COMPROMISING ON QUALITY.

ODETTE STEELE

ZAMBIAN BORN, ODETTE STEELE IS A TEXTILE DESIGNER AND RECENT GRADUATE OF LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION, SPECIALISING IN EMBROIDERY/EMBELLISHMENT AND PRINT DESIGN. HER INFLUENCES DERIVE FROM HER AFRICAN HERITAGE THROUGH THE DYNAMIC COMPOSITION OF PATTERN AND COLOUR.

AN INDIVIDUAL DESIGN STYLE IS ACHIEVED THROUGH MANIPULATING RECYCLED AND WASTE FABRICS THROUGH WEAVING OR USING EMBELLISHMENT TO CREATE A FUSION OF VARIOUS MATERIALS TO CREATE A HANDCRAFTED LUXURIOUS PRODUCT. COLLECTIVELY ODETTE’S POWERFUL DESIGN IDENTITY AS WELL HER PASSION ON THE PRESERVATION, DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN TEXTILES AND INTERNATIONAL FASHION, MAKE ODETTE A VALUABLE INDIVIDUAL WITHIN HER FIELD OF WORK.

STRIVING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE POINT OF SUSTAINABILITY IN SHOWING THAT THIS HAS NOT ONLY TO DO WITH ENERGY CONSUMPTION, RECYCLING ETC. BUT ALSO THE HUMAN INVOLVEMENT IN THE PRODUCTION OF GOODS. THIS APPROACH ENCOURAGES AN INVESTMENT INTO THE SKILLS OF CRAFTSPEOPLE BY STRENGTHENING THE HAND RENDERED PURSUIT TO PRODUCTION. FURTHERMORE BY WORKING TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICAN FASHION, WHEREBY ODETTE HAS COMBINED HER BELIEFS AND SKILLS ON CONTRIBUTING TO THE ORGANISATION OF EVENTS SUCH AS AFRICA FASHION WEEK LONDON WHICH IS A COLLECTIVE CATWALK AND EXHIBITION, HIGHLIGHTING THE INDUSTRY’S ESTABLISHED AND EMERGED AFRICAN DESIGNERS. AT THE FOREFRONT OF CAPTURING THE SURGE OF THE AFRICAN DESIGN IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY THE EVENT AIMS TO CELEBRATE THE WORK OF AFRICAN AND AFRICAN INSPIRED DESIGNERS IN THE UK AND WORLDWIDE. 

 

 

ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED SHOWS DURING LONDON FASHION WEEK, FASHION SCOUT’S ONES TO WATCH IS INSTRUMENTAL IN RAISING THE PROFILE OF EMERGING DESIGN ON A GLOBAL SCALE. THIS COLLECTION  WAS SELECTED FROM A SHORTLIST OF 50 EMERGING DESIGNERS BY A PANEL OF INDUSTRY EXPERTS WHICH THIS SEASON INCLUDED MARTYN ROBERTS FASHION SCOUT’S FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR , HILARY ALEXANDER OBE, CRAIG SPELLAR, AND OUR ONES TO WATCH STYLIST, REBEKAH ROY.

 THE ONES TO WATCH DESIGNERS PRESENTED THEIR NEW COLLECTIONS IN A CATWALK SHOWCASE AS WELL AS BEING PART OF FASHION SCOUT’S DESIGNER EXHIBITION DURING LONDON FASHION WEEK. ONES TO WATCH IS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT EMERGING DESIGNERS, DEVELOP BUSINESS INTERNATIONALLY AND GENERATE MAXIMUM MEDIA AND BUYER ATTENDANCE. THE ONES TO WATCH CATWALK WAS HELD AT THE ICONIC FREEMASONS’ HALL, COVENT GARDEN, ON SATURDAY 20TH FEBRUARY 2016 AT 11.30, DURING FASHION SCOUT’S 20TH SEASON.
