There is often dispute about what fashion is and can be. Is it expressing your identity? Or creating a story? One designer who makes us ask this question is Edda Gimnes.
Edda Gimnes first captured attention with her lively aesthetic and sketchy monochrome designs when she graduated from London College of Fashion in 2015. Fast forward two years and you can imagine our excitement when we heard that our Merit Award Winner had been nominated for the Oslo Bik Bok Runway Award. Edda is in competition with four other emerging designers who will all showcase their collections on Oslo runway on the 24th of August.
Bik Bok is a member of Norway’s largest fashion company whose ultimate aim is to cultivate the fresh faces of design. The award has every intention of backing talented designers pushing them to the forefront of fashion. The winning jury is pretty impressive: with the Creative director of Bik Bok, Camilla Skavern, and the director of CSM MA fashion course, Fabio Piras, alongside Kine B. Hartz, Nicole Walker, Petra Middelthon, and Siri Johansen.
The originality and creativity of Edda Gimnes has definitely garnered attention, seen through the intrigue and excitement that surrounds the previous Ones To Watch winner on an International stage.
Edda has multiple awards to her name, including the 2015 The BFTA Saga Fur competition award, and the 2016 International Fur Federations Remix bronze award. Edda has recently won the Designer for Tomorrow Award, as well as being named our Merit Award Winner, following in the footsteps of Phoebe English, David Koma and Roberts|Wood among others. There is no stopping this international designer, it’s no wonder she has the attention of the fashion industry worldwide.
Her life size pencil sketches scream childhood nostalgia reminding us of when we were younger, inciting emotional reaction to her pieces, whilst encouraging a playfulness that has recently been missing from conceptual design. Expect exciting things to come as this Norwegian designer has consistently demonstrated her incredible talents therefore we would like to wish her the best of luck in Oslo, ahead of her Spring/Summer 18 show with Fashion Scout during London Fashion Week this September.
