Ester Kubisz is one of this season’s Fashion Scout Ones To Watch award winner. She graduated from Ravensbourne University in 2013, and went on to win the Best Garment Award at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Ester’s SS17 collection is inspired by her reaction to the corporate world and people’s desires for wealth, exploring the fundamentals of traditional professional men’s attire. Ester exercises innovative textile embroidery to deconstruct and recreate the traditional pinstripe.
The rainy streets in London on the day of the showcase are filled to the brim with men and women in suits, blind to the colour and chaos of fashion week and charging through the crowds focused solely on their corporate gloom. The scene switches to the Gallery at Freemason's Hall with Fashion Scout, and gliding down the runway come the models, dressed in the signature deconstructed clean cut tailoring of Ester Kubisz. The SS17 collection is an expansion on her last collection, with raw, contemporary twists to the traditional pinstripe. Ester is another designer joining the gender fluidity movement. This collection was initially designed as solely menswear but she encourages it to be used in unisex styling.
The variations on the pinstripe ranged from stripes fading away, mirroring the designers tiring of the corporate world to shredded suits and emphasised pinstripes by bolder stitching. Whilst the suited and booted in the streets of London wipe the raindrops from their lenses, the models in the distressed suits appeared to be in a brighter reality wearing sunglasses from Specsavers down the catwalk.
