A self-confessed full blown maximalist Kristel Kuslapuu’s collection is an explosion of bold, whimsical designs in bright tones, innocent curls and tiaras, and powerful political slogans.
Chosen by the Fashion Scout Ones To Watch Selection panel, Kristel Kuslapuu attended the Estonian Academy of Arts, excelling in Fashion Design. Continuing to stay at the top of her game, the Estonian-born Kuslapuu showed personal collections at numerous fashion events including New York Fashion Week and Mercedes Benz Kiev Fashion Week.
Pushing the boundaries and norms of design and inspired by the clichés and ironies in the society around her, Kuslapuu mixes playful colours with provocative and ironic messages like ‘Mental Breakdance’ and ‘Attention Horse’. Influenced by social anxieties and dark secrets, one piece incorporates a balaclava within a roll neck; another creation constructed from a entanglement of black wool forms an otherworldly silhouette over white tracksuit trousers.
Persevering with the satirical theme, Kristel teams electric-blue sequin underlays with a beige sock and sandal combination. She constructs unique patterns of lava, horses, and childish hearts onto alpaca, goat, camel and sheep’s wool.
Showcasing her deep-rooted commitment to unisex designs, Kristel continues her use of oversized cuts, chunky knits, and bright colours. Transcending traditional gender norms, the womenswear comprises of boxy and ill-fitting sweaters, whereas menswear consists of waist-cinching cardigans and skin revealing cobweb structures.
