By Jan Miller, Jan Miller Consultancy
This season we welcome back our industry insiders for the SS19 Fashion Scout Masterclasses. Informative and insightful classes taught by our guest speakers ran from Monday 17th to Tuesday the 18th , straight after our SS19 shows. These talks are enabling young designers to grasp the business aspect of their design careers. Cassey Gan, who has showcased her work for two seasons at Fashion Scout, told us that ‘a lot of things that she said were really in-depth and it’s really good to put things into perspective for a new brand like myself’.
Jan Miller from Jan Miller Consultancy, an expert in mentoring young designers such as Simone Roche, began by inviting the attendees to ask themselves why they became a fashion designer. And through reflecting on their achievements, Jan went on to discuss the typical business challenges that young designers face discussing how these can be managed. With design only taking up a small part a fashion designers time, Jan explained the importance of educating yourself on the finance, manufacturing and legal elements.
Jan went on to discuss various tips that designers need to consider such as trademarking their name and registering a business bank account, focusing in on the little things that may be forgotten. Her presentation also featured detailed designer fashion business models so explain how one business plan doesn’t fit all, every designer and brand require different things.
